For 30 years, the Miquon Math Materials have offered children a friendly invitation to the world of mathematics. Saxon is is the number 1 homeschool math program.  It builds on itself, and has LOTS of practice.  Saxon is great for students who are struggling in math or who excel at math.  USE THE PLACEMENT TESTS!  I can not stress enough how important the placement tests are, as Saxon does not correspond to 'grades' but to levels.

If your child learns math VERY quickly and does not need review, or lots of practice you can try Singapore math 1-6 (level runs about 2-3 grades ahead).  Many who use Singapore at the elementary or middle school level jump back to Saxon for higher math or use Harold Jacobs.

We love both Singapore and Saxon math equally, it is really based on your child's learning style.

The manipulatives kit is a very useful tool for ANY K-6 math program.

An Algebra Aptitude test is available through Bob Jones University Press Testing Pages   and it seems like a great idea for before starting algebra.  From what I read about it many high schools use it to tell if a child is ready for algebra or not.

If your child learns math VERY quickly and does NOT need review, or practice you try Singapore math. 

It is LEVELS NOT GRADES  (it tends to run about 2-3 levels above grades). We recommend you USE THE PLACEMENT TEST. 

This is a great math program for visual learners.  You NEED the homeschool teachers guide as this math teaches in a unique way.  For the first time I can do ratios quickly and easily in my head!  Primary Math 5A - 6B has multi-step math, and has been listed by many 'curriculum guides' as containing problems that are as  complex as high school math.  Many children finish 6B, then proceed to Saxon Algebra 1/ 2 or 1.

Singapore math comes in A and B semester format.  If you are starting level 1 you would get 1A and 1B of each of the books below.

Key Curriculum Press has a awesome set of books called The Key to  for the reluctant mathematician or the young gifted mathematician who is not ready for a high school math book. 

Imagine math made easy and fun.  I love these books!

Teacher have used them instead of texts, with texts, and prior to texts.  They are just great tools.  I have included the whole series here and recommend them whole heartily.
