Reading Complete: Level A Overview

This self-paced reading program is designed to teach beginning readers and can supplement any curriculum. It combines phonics and sight word recognition skills to teach a child how to read fluently and expressively. Language arts skills of spelling, punctuation, grammar, handwriting, and reading comprehension are included.

The daily lessons incorporate the use of flashcards, games, activities, and independent written practice. Each lesson reviews the previous skills and introduces a new skill. This program is designed to be self-paced, and the child should master the lesson’s skills before moving on to the next lesson. The child will learn to read short vowel words and sight words within context.

  1. Recognize the symbol and sound for each letter in the alphabet.
  2. Write upper and lower case manuscript letters using proper spacing between letters.
  3. Develop left to right and top to bottom orientation.
  4. Recognize beginning level sight words.
  5. Recognize eleven basic color words: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, pink, brown, black, gray, white.
  6. Recognize number words one-ten.
  7. Recognize basic shape words: square, circle, triangle, rectangle, star, oval, cross, diamond, heart.
  8. Recognize ordinal number words first-tenth.
  9. Blend consonant sounds together with short vowel sounds.
  10. Read short vowel words.
  11. Identify and use words that rhyme, start, or end with the same sound.
  12. Use word recognition skills and strategies to read and comprehend text.
  13. Read sentences with fluency and inflection.
  14. Write clearly and effectively.
  15. Understand that the names of people and places start with capital letters.
  16. Understand that a sentence ends with a punctuation mark: period, question mark, exclamation point.
  17. Understand that quotation marks are used to show the words someone has said.
  18. Make singular nouns plural by adding “s.”
  19. Analyze and evaluate the effectiveness of written work.
  20. Develop listening comprehension and the ability to retell a story.
